Saturday -- GRADUATION! The cadets did an outstanding job today at graduation! We are so proud and honored to have had the chance to work with this fine group of young people this week. The pass in review was terrific, and the presentation by the Honor Guard contingent was AWESOME! We hope every cadet enjoyed the training as much as we enjoyed leading it. Thank you to all our officers and staff cadets for a job well done. I hope we'll see many of you cadets and staff back next year! Reminder -- If you enjoyed the training, please let your chain of command and HQ know! LTJG Robinson

Because of the teamwork nature of the Culinary Arts training, we never award an honor cadet. All of our culinary cadets did a tremendous job!

Bravo Zulu to all graduates of the 2010 Florida Institute of Technology Training Contingent!

Friday -- All of the cadets (except culinary!) had final exams today. After a tremendous thunderstorm, we practiced for graduation only to have to flee the field for yet another lightning-filled storm. That cleared up and we left for a giant pizza party on the beach. A terrific time was had by ALL! Now it's off to bed so the cadets can be ready to pack up and go home tomorrow. The behind the scenes work of our Administrative Officers will go into the early hours of the morning so that every record, every certificate, the graduation programs, and many, many other details are perfect for the cadets. We are extremely fortunate to have LTJG Cathy McColgan and ENS Denise Graham as our Admin Officers! The final update for the training will be posted after graduation, and we invite you to continue to enjoy the photos of training in the weeks to come! It has truly been our pleasure to give your cadet a positive and meaningful experience during this summer training! LTJG Robinson

Thursday -- The day started early for many of the officers because we had to have the cadets at the pool by 6:30AM for swim qualifications! Cadets enjoyed swimming and practicing inflating their clothes to assist with flotation in case they fall overboard. (Parents, PLEASE get your cadet some swimming lessons to improve their strokes and help them to become stronger swimmers!) The NLCC Basic cadets had classes and marching instruction. Then they got dressed up in their "salt and peppers" and went to the Melbourne Municipal Band concert.
Culinary cadets made another dinner, and their cheesecake did not last long once the staff cadets got hold of it. Very tasty! Honor guard cadets are working on their rifle drill routine which will be performed Saturday at graduation. POLA had Major Ed Garcia, USAF, retired, speak about every day leadership opportunities. His talk drew upon those people he had worked with (both superiors and subordinates) who taught him what true leadership was. It was an excellent presentation!

Wednesday -- What a busy day! Your emails to NLCC Basic are rolling in. Thank you. Honor Guard was very fortunate to spend the day with a retired Navy warrant officer who worked for many years in ceremonial/honor guard activities. He explained all aspects of a Navy funeral with appropriate honors and consideration for next of kin. We had both a casket and an urn on hand for a realistic experience. The warrant officer was a model of leadership and professionalism and we were fortunate to have his time.
POLA continued with classes and marching. The cadets did more impromptu public speaking and Constitution study. NLCC Basic cadets took the LC2 test and EVERYONE passed! So there will be many cadets getting stripes when they go home. The cadets are improving dramatically at military bearing and manners. Yes, manners! We have them working on greeting adults and petty officers with a friendly "Good morning" or "Good afternoon." NLCC Basic cadets also had a wonderful guest speaker, a gentleman from the Sons of the American Revolution who came in costume and discussed the last Naval battle of the American Revolution fought off the coast of Cape Canaveral. Culinary arts cadets continued working in the dining facility. The first group made a dinner, and the quiche was particularly good! All honor guard, POLA, and Culinary cadets attended a concert performed by Melbourne Municipal Band featuring the music of Cole Porter.

Tuesday -- We've got more pictures up! Please see the link above. Tuesday was another scorcher, but a huge thunderstorm after noon chow really helped to cool it off. All cadets except POLA were ordered by the Medical Officer to wear PT gear after lunch to help combat the heat. NLCC Basic continued classes and got started on intense marching instruction. POLA had several guest speakers including active duty Navy personnel who talked about how the Navy had changed their lives, a retired Submarine petty officer who discussed leadership traits and how to be a leader and team player under the high pressure, underwater world of the submariner, and a retire Navy captain who was a submariner in World War II and participated in the sinking of a Japanese aircraft carrier and two destroyers. Honor Guard continued working on rifle twirling, flag folding, and other ceremonial skills. Culinary Arts visited Keiser University's culinary arts program and made a complete lunch with the chefs. LTJG Smith and I got to eat their food, and it was delicious! We have lots happening for Wednesday, so check for another update late tonight or early Thursday. LTJG Robinson
P.S. If you know a parent of an NLCC Basic cadet, please ask him/her to send an email to the cadet. We want to make sure EVERY NLCC Basic cadet receives encouragement from home. Thanks.

Monday -- Wow, it is HOT! We've never had weather as hot as this at a summer training! This challenge is really helping us grow in flexibility and creativity! Due to the extreme heat, we have been unable to do the quantity of marching and sports that we would have liked. However, we are adapting and overcoming! All cadets were up for PT at 0445 when it was still pretty cool. Our Basic Orienation cadets spent most of the day in the classroom learning many basic skills and working on ironing. They had an early "lights out" tonight, and we expect they are sleeping very well. Honor Guard worked on rifle drill, flag folding, and also had a color guard performance at the Liberty Bell Museum for Flag Day. POLA learned about justice, did public speaking, and learned about many leadership topics. Culinary Arts went on a shopping spree at the grocery store to prepare for their cooking competition later in the week. All advanced training cadets had liberty this evening with their choice of the swimming pool, tennis, basketball, or just hanging out. Of course, some of them did laundry in place of liberty. Everyone is doing great! This is an outstanding group of cadets who are eager and motivated to learn. LTJG Robinson

Sunday -- The cadets got settled in Sunday afternoon and evening. Classes on appropriate behavior and watchstanding were taught to all cadets. Then each training contingent broke out for marching practice and a vigorous PT session. The outstanding food served at FIT was enjoyed by all! Main course options included pork tips w/gravy, baked tilapia, spicy chicken, fettucini alfredo, lasagna, salad bar, fresh fruit, various vegetables, and much more. PT happens each morning at 0500 so the cadets were encouraged to get to sleep quickly! Another update tomorrow, and we hope to have some photos to share soon. LTJG Robinson
